Tinos

I

n Greece, Tinos is famous above all for the Church of Panagia Evangelistria. Located at the port, which is also the island’s main town, this is the best-known Orthodox pilgrimage site in Greece. This is a both good thing and a bad thing: bad because behind the religious frenzy and the hundreds of thousands of pilgrims who arrive here each August to visit the church and leave within the same day, lies a magnificently beautiful island with excellent food, magical small villages, great beaches, natural beauties and rich traditions, just begging to be explored. But good because this same religious fame has kept this island and its beauties veiled from mass tourism for a very long time. However, for some years now the secret is out and more and more people visit and fall in love with Tinos’ wild beauty, picturesque mountainous villages, breathtaking sunsets and exquisite tastes.

Ideal for families, romantic couples, and adventure-lovers (surfing, climbing and trekking are the draw here); Tinos has also become popular with a sophisticated crowd, looking for the beauties of the Cyclades in a not-so-touristy package. Just remember, do not judge this island by its port (Chora) when you arrive, because you will be disappointed; it is once you leave it behind and set off for the villages that you will begin to unlock the secrets of Tinos and learn to love it forever.
